TWO OAKLAND SCHOOLS LOCKED DOWN MONDAY

Two Oakland schools locked down their campuses for over 30 minutes this morning after a man was shot near Rudsdale Academy and gunshots were heard near Calvin Simmons Middle School.

Rudsdale Academy locked down after a 24-year-old man was shot at about 9:30 a.m. on Hamilton Street between 69th and 70th avenues, a little over a block from the school, police said.
Calvin Simmons Middle School locked down around 9:50 a.m. after gunshots were heard, said Alex Katz, a spokesman for the Oakland school district. No students were hurt in either instance, but the schools lock down as a precaution, Katz said.

"Pretty much, when a gun goes off in Oakland, it's within a few blocks of a school," he said. "There's a lot of schools in Oakland."

Are we so jaded? Are the police so nonchalant to issue such a statement?

Each school sits within a few blocks of a shooting in Oakland! Think of the sheer numbers of students affected by each shooting.
