School Fundraiser

Wow, delicious pasta!

There was no spaghetti in sight at the school's "spaghetti feed".

Pasta. I wonder when that changed?

The salad was drippy and slightly crinkled, but it's all for a good cause right!?

The garlic bread was soaked right through with butter and toasted just right...a little crunchy on the edges.

There was an auction for 8 big collections:

1. Garden (it came with a small cart, but I don't need a SMALL cart)

2. Sports (naw, never was much into sports...except when the 49ers were heading to the Super Bowl or when the Giant's were in the World Series playoffs...a fair weather sports fan I am.)

3. Baking (cool stuff, but I'm done with cooking after 34 1/2 yrs. !)

4. Games for family night (we don't have family night...it always sounded like an excellent idea, but dysfunctional families are busy with other things)

5. Ice cream (a maker, ingredients...too much work)

We bought 3 tickets for the 5 big items at the auction, but I couldn't hear the announcement of winners over the raucous socializing...I'll just wait for the phone call.

At the big Holy Ghost Hall, we all gather...country people...farmers, mechanics, teachers, moms, dads, cousins, lots of little kids racing around and old people hobbling. LOUD! WOW! No acoustics in that cinderblock building! But lot's of laughing. Lots of crowding around the desert table...fifty cents a cupcake.

Coffee came with glass bottles of cream from the local organic dairy.
Cowboy boots abounded...and cowboy hats.

The firefighters were really tall, our little one could barely see his face...so she looked at his pockets when he handed down a corny magnet. She stuck it in her sweatshirt pocket with a shy smile, hood pulled down.

Friends and neighbors...we only knew 5 people there...but boy did we ever feel part of it. Our community. The city folk are beginning to fit in.

"We've lived here 25 years, now!" we say proudly.
The 5th generation comments, "Oh, newcomers, huh?"
