A and J drive to a cabin in the snow where they will visit friends.
Leaving at 2 or 2:30 would have been a good plan. But A and J must return several times to their houses before they embark. It seems they forgot important things such as drivers licenses and glasses. At last they head out of town. But, A and are blissfully ignorant of forgetting directions to the cabin.
J is driving because A would rather back seat drive this time, unlike the trip to China Town in which J and M back seat drove in unison.
(Chapter 2 ~ Alice and Joelle go to China Town)
While driving along the freeway Alice gasps and points out dangerous, fast cars, swerving trucks and general danger. J gasps along with A as many desperate transportation situations arise.
Finally they reach a small city in the foothills. Whew! A and J pull off to eat dinner. Whew! Subway is still open. Subway offers it's best and everyone calms down. A has Clam Chowder. J has a Sandwich. They both order a Cookie and Drink to go. The mood is carefree and funny anecdotes are told. A and J notice the dusk descending. They must continue their journey. At home it was sunny.
The weather station is now reporting snow at the summit. A and J do not have snow chains. Now they look for a tire store. A and J find the Tire Store , about to close. Luckily they did not stay to eat their cookies at Subway. The appropriate chains are purchased. The drive continues in the dark.
A and J plan to pay the Chain Technicians for putting on chains at the summit, as the Tire Man has suggested. Here comes the summit. J and A see snow falling on the icy highway. They do not see stopped cars. They do not see Chain Technicians helping drivers put on chains. They notice very few vehicles on the road
.
Then A and J do see a big Tractor Truck ahead. The Truck moves slowly making deep tracks visible through the ice. A and J follow the truck. Carefully and Slowly. They discuss various options. They do have brand new chains in the car. They do not have anyone to help put them on.
Somehow A and J make it to the turnoff without chains. The options have narrowed. Now A and J discover they have left the directions for the cabin behind. They do remember the name of the town and the name of the street.
Someone must make a decision. Decision making is not the forte for A or J. Options narrow. Driving continues through inertia up a steep hill. To stop would mean to lose traction on the icy road. Stopping is ruled out for fear of slipping down the hill to the darkened town.
House numbers are not visible. The point is moot, as and J do have the number.
Having studied physics in college A and J sense the end is near. The Apex appears to be the next lighted driveway. The time has come to turn into a driveway, any driveway. A and J pull in. The car comes to a stop. The engine is off. A and J get out. Wow! A and J spot familiar faces through the window!
A and J have landed at the cabin! Who would have guessed!?
