Once we entered the scarecrow contest.
They didn't get the strange bony plywood grandma
in bathing suit, hose in hand...attached to a spigot.
But they ooohed over a dad's grape jam.
Small card tables were set for 4 with glitzy glamour.
Cupcakes and cactus gardens.
There were ribbons and cash in each category.
A wall of ribbons. Everyone won!
Farm animals. Amateur art and knitting.
Oil paintings, photographs.
Crafts, flower arranging and jams.
Four H posters, Girl Scouts cakes and hand sewn shorts.
Don't ever forget the Hall of Selling:
tacky items and septic systems,
shower door cleaners and cooking demonstrations,
Sola Tube. Fudge and personalized routered signs.
Then comes the weird trip through the midway,
throwing darts at balloons,
pennies at glass plates and winning a goldfish!
(No more, animal rights people, no more.)
The winners chose cheapo stuffed animals
or invisible fake dogs walking on a leash.
Cotton candy and a ferris wheel.
Corn dogs and a humongous slide with burlap sacks.
Taco Trucks and merry-go-round.
Funnel cakes and kettle corn.
Little kids beep, beep, beeping
Little kids beep, beep, beeping
at the horns of little motorcycles and cars.
The Ugly Dog Contest.
One year there was a baby crawling contest.
Most sat there and wailed for mom.
Most sat there and wailed for mom.
Some bright shiny infant made it to the end and won Pampers.
Music at the Fair THIS summer:
Country and western and rap and sap.
Sorry, my prejudice is showing.
Where are the great entertainers?
Where is Huey Lewis,
(Hughly Loulie to those who knew him)
Kenny Loggins, Tower of Power, Journey?
(were they great or were the 80's great?)
The 80's are soooooooo passé.
Though quite nostalgic to the new adults.
Madonna, Cindy Lauper, She-Bop.
Michael Jackson, with sister Janice tagging along.
Weird Al was a Surgeon.
He Lost at Jeopardy, Baby.
As much as we loved THRILLER,
we laughed all the way through EAT IT,
courtesy of brand new tv cable and MTV!
Then children grew up.
They worked hard in annoying classes at high school.
Traded in surfer pants and slip ons for Goodwill vintage.
Graduated, grew up, and got serious
Good Town and Country people.
They grew up and are doing good things
in Town, Country, City, World.
