DOG TRAINING PUZZLE

Sometimes dogs need training.

For instance:
puppies, or rescue dogs, or both.

Usually you can train them!

But sometimes not.

That's the puzzle.

Some dogs know many commands, some know tricks and some can only gaze star-struck at the object of their adoration and chase other dogs.
Some dogs need meds. Some dogs do not.

Some need meds. for itches. Itches can require two kinds of meds... for allergies and inflamation (and also an occasional surgery for the really bad spots).

Some dogs need meds. for anxiety which can cost thousands of dollars of damage to the home, thus requiring two kinds of meds...for anxiety and panic disorders.

Some dogs are just so darn good that even though they may have DADHD (doggie attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) they are good, good, good. No destruction, no surgeries, just fun.

They chase water spurting from hoses until they are ready to collapse, but they won't collapse...no way...they must keep running and biting the water!!
HEY, turn off the hose or the dog with have a stroke!!!

He also must check the perimeter, and then come back to chase and bite water from the hose.
He can even go to dog parks.

Unlike some dogs who may try to hunt down and kill the prey because they have a strong prey instinct.
(wait! it's only a teeny baby fox terrier!!)
or some may get scared and roll over to show submission.
(eeeew! don't roll over in the poop!!)

In conclusion:

*some canines are good and hyper and playful.
*some are
sweet and itchy and submissive.
*some are
darling, but ditzy, a little anxious, and a bit intense.

Can all be trained?

My guess is probably not.

Can you match the dogs to the characteristics?
(see photo above) Clockwise, by color:
Red Retriever:
Lemon Basset:

Black Shepherd:

Lemme see, Red dog: hyper and wrecks stuff, yellow dog: itchy, stubborn, cute, black dog: waterplay all the time.
But we love them all probably.

"lemon" basset?!

FYI: Yes, "lemon" is the official basset-ish color for red and white.
The black ones are very rare, some solid red, but the rest are "tri-color". Self explanatory.
Also, their big ole floppy lips are called flews.

The basset rescue people have a trick when interviewing potential adopters...They bring a big old slobbery basset with them and watch how the people react as the dog smears yuck all over the walls and chairs. Then they shake!
(See the "Oh, No, More Animals!" Blog. Last paragraph.

If this behavior doesn't horrify them, they might make good owners.

There are also lemon beagles - and you know how crazy some of us are about beagles (any color)!
I've always loved the word 'flews' - because that's what happens to the spitui when they shake their heads and flappy their lips around!
It flews all over the place.

Today I met a St. Bernard 'puppy' by the name of Toby. He's only about 6 months old, but HUGE.
Fuzzy fur! Toby had major flew action and just big wetness around the mouth in general. He snoozled his face into JessieRosie's tummy and left quite a bit of snotty flewsy spitui residue on her tee shirt.

We all went 'Eeeeuuuuwww!' but she didn't wipe it off.
I think she'd make a good basset or St. Bernard owner. But not at this time. Two beagles is already a handful!
